All six people missing after a bridge collapsed due to a cargo ship collision in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, have been presumed dead. US officials have suspended their search until Wednesday morning (local time).

In fact, a container ship flying the Singapore flag collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore city on Tuesday morning. Within a few seconds of this collision, the entire bridge broke down and fell horribly into the river. All the 22 crew members aboard this ship were Indians and all are safe.

How did the ship collide with the bridge
The ship was going from Baltimore to Colombo. According to a report by news agency AFP, the 300-meter-long ship is believed to have collided with a pillar of the bridge. Due to this, several vehicles and about 20 people fell into the Patapsco River. US officials said the ship’s crew had reported electrical problems before the collision.

Synergy Marine Group said in a statement, ‘The owners and managers of the Singapore-flagged container ship ‘DALI’ (IMO 9697428) reported that the ship collided with a pillar of the two Francis Scott Baltimore bridge at about 1.30 pm local time on March 26.’ It said, ‘All crew members, including two pilots, have been accounted for and there are no reports of injuries.

The governor called the Indian crew a hero
Meanwhile, Maryland Governor Wes Moore said the ship, which was moving at a ‘fast’ speed of 8 knots (9 mph), issued a mayday call just moments before hitting the bridge pillar. His alert prompted officials to take immediate action and stop vehicles from going on the bridge.

Moore said, ‘We are grateful that between the mayday and the accident, we had officers who stopped the traffic in time.’ He praised the ship’s crew members and said, ‘These people are heroes. They saved people’s lives last night.’
