New Delhi: An American columnist has praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A renowned American expert and columnist on South Asian affairs says that this is definitely the Modi era in India and in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the country, the ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is clearly in a strong position and will return to power for the third time. Sadanand Dhume, South Asia affairs columnist for the Wall Street Journal and associated with the think tank American Enterprise Institute, said this in an interview to PTI.

Sadanand Dhume said that this is the Modi era in India. He said, ‘In Indian context, this is undoubtedly the Modi era. Just like there has been the Trump era in American politics since 2015, whether he is in power or not. In India, there has clearly been the Modi era since about 2013.’ He said, ‘Whether you like him or hate him, he is at the center of national discussion. If you look at politics from the time of Indira Gandhi till now, you will find that there is no leader who has been at the center of national discussion like this.’

Dhume said that the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has done a very good job on the economic front. He said, ‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal popularity remains very high. If you look at the surveys, it is around 80% which is one of the highest, if not the highest, for world leaders. Another thing is that in many ways the opposition has really collapsed. Congress has not been able to recover after two consecutive disappointing performances, first in 2014 and then in 2019.’

Dhume said historically India has long been a country that has had only one powerful national party. If you look at the 60s, 70s, 80s, it was dominated by the Congress party and now it is dominated by the BJP, not to the extent that the Congress once dominated. He said, “The main opposition party in India, the Congress, has not been able to create a system to prepare its successor leadership, as successful political parties around the world have done. In the US, whether it is the Labor Party or the Conservative Party or the Democratic Party. When you lose elections, you usually get new leadership.” Dhume said, but the Congress does not know how to do it because it has become a family-run party.
