I felt hungry for 120 hours during my trip to Europe – Indian billionaire


United Nations/New Delhi. Only someone who has experienced hunger can tell what hunger is like. Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy said that 50 years ago when he was travelling in Europe, he felt hungry for 120 hours continuously. Narayana Murthy (77) was addressing a special programme organised by India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations at the United Nations Headquarters here. The theme of the programme was ‘Achievements in Food Security: India’s Efforts towards Sustainable Development Goals’.

The event, organised to mark the serving of the four billionth meal by Indian NGO Akshaya Patra Foundation, showcased India’s innovative strategies, policies and achievements in food security and nutrition and their integration with the SDGs, particularly the goal of ‘zero hunger’. “Many of you may not have experienced hunger. I have,” he said while addressing UN diplomats, officials, academics, social organisations and members of the Indian diaspora community.

Narayana Murthy said that 50 years ago I endured 120 hours of continuous hunger while travelling in Europe. This happened in a place called Nish, which is a city located on the border between Bulgaria and the then Yugoslavia and today’s Serbia.

The Indian billionaire said that most Indians here and I have received good quality and highly subsidized education from the Indian government. So as civilized people, we should express our gratitude to our nation and help the future generation of these helpless, poor children to get good education.
