Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya is an Indian jurist, who is serving as a senior judge at the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court. He is also a Member of the Administrative Committee of the Allahabad High Court. On 5 July 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the name of Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, also known as D. K. Upadhyaya , was born on Wednesday, 16 June 1965 (age 58 years; as of 2023) in Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. His zodiac sign is Gemini. He pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Lucknow University, Uttar Pradesh, in 1991. On 11 May 1991, Devendra Kumar enrolled as an advocate at the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh. Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya began his career as a lawyer in 1991 by joining the chambers of senior advocate Mohd Arif Khan in the Allahabad High Court. In 1997, he shifted to the chamber of senior advocate SK Kalia. Upadhyaya was appointed as the chief standing counsel of the Uttar Pradesh Government at the Lucknow bench in 2007. During his legal practice, Devendra Kumar specialised in civil and constitutional matters. On 21 November 2011, Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya was elevated as the additional judge of the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court.
He took oath as a permanent judge of the Allahabad High Court on 6 August 2013. In March 2023, Upadhyaya was appointed as a senior judge of the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court and is the third senior most judge there. He is also a member of the Administrative Committee of the Allahabad High Court. On 5 July 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud and Justices S K Kaul and Sanjiv Khanna in its resolution proposed to appoint Justice Upadhyaya as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. The recommendation reads,
A vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Bombay has arisen recently consequent upon retirement of Mr Justice Ramesh D. Dhanuka. Therefore, appointment to that office is required to be made. It is proposed to appoint Mr Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Bombay.”
He is expected to retire from his services on 15 June 2027.
As per the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC), the salary of a judge of a high court is estimated to be Rs. 2,25,000 + other allowances.
